Ted Bull was a long-time member of the Waterside Workers' Federation. This recording explores Bull's time as a rank and file member and also as Secretary of that Union. Some of the issues and events covered include: The Pig Iron Dispute; the control of the WWF by the Industrial Groupers up to 1954 and their subsequent overthrow; a plot to assassinate Jim Healy; working conditions on the waterfront during the 1950s; the recruitment of indigenous people by the WWF for work on the wharves; various industrial disputes; refusal to load ships for Vietnam, South Africa and Greece; WWF publications; the role of wives in support of husbands during strikes; Bull's compulsory retirement in 1979.

Albert Smith and Ray Elliot were employed as dock workers on the 14 November 1938 when the Waterside Workers' Federation refused to load iron ore onto the Japan-bound vessel, 'Dalfram'. The then Attorney-General, Robert Menzies, went to Port Kembla to persuade workers to load the vessel. As a result of his advocacy of continued exports, Menzies earned the sobriquet of 'Pig-Iron Bob'. The dispute ended on the 12 January 1939. The interview deals with the role of various parties such as BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd.) and Jim Healy. It also discusses aspects of the Depression, and various Waterside Workers strikes and lockouts at Port Kembla.
