Function: Trade Union (Federal)
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation Staff Union precursor, the Australian Broadcasting Commission Staff Association, was registered under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act on 31 October 1938. This Act and the Public Service Arbitration Act governed its functions, duties and industrial rights. On 28 February 1985 the name was changed to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Staff Union.

Registration of the union was cancelled on 4 August 1989 following its amalgamation with the Administrative & Clerical Officers' Association and the Australian Public Service Association to form the Australian Public Sector and Broadcasting Union, Australian Government Employment (generally known as the Public Sector Union). The ABC Sub-branch of the Public Sector Union handled the ABC issues.

In 1991 the Meat Inspectors' Association, Australian Public Service amalgamated with the Public Sector Union. Several more amalgamations occurred in 1992. These included an amalgamation with the Professional Officers' Association, Australian Public Service to form the Australian Public Sector Professional & Broadcasting Union, Australian Government Employment. Later that year the union also absorbed the Association of Health Professionals (Commonwealth Public Service), and amalgamated with the Professional Radio & Electronics Institute of Australasia to form the Public Sector Professional Technical Communications Aviation & Broadcasting Union.

Following an amalgamation with the CSIRO Staff Association in 1993 the union became registered as the Public Sector Professional Scientific Research Technical Communications Aviation & Broadcasting Union.

Finally, in 1994 the union absorbed the State Public Services Federation and became registered as the Community & Public Sector Union [CPSU]. The CPSU is a federal union that represents telecommunications, broadcasting and public sector workers in Australia, and the ABC remains a Section of this union.
