Summary

With links as far back as the mid-nineteenth century in the metal working and engineering industry, the Metals & Engineering Workers' Union came about through the amalgamation of the Amalgamated Metal Workers' Union and the Association of Draughting Supervisory & Technical Employees in 1991. In 1993 a further amalgamation with the Vehicle Builders Employees' Federation of Australia saw the demise of this short-lived union. Its members were amalgamated into the new Automotive Metals & Engineering Union only to become part of the Automotive Food Metals & Engineering Union in 1994 when it merged with the Confectionery Workers' & Food Preservers' Union of Australia.
