The Factory Employees' Union of Australasia was formed in Sydney circa 1908. It covered employees in laundries, fat extraction and bone mills, and factories manufacturing jam, soap, candles, paper, card board boxes, biscuits, cakes, glue and paint.

In 1922 the Union became the Factory Branch of the Australian Workers Union, NSW Branch (AWU).

In 1993 the AWU and the Federation of Industrial, Manufacturing & Engineering Employees (FIMEE) amalgamated to form the AWU-FIME Amalgamated Union, and in July 1995 the AWU-FIME Amalgamated Union became the Australian Workers Union (AWU).
