Summary

The Malmsbury Miners' Association, formed to protect the wages and conditions of miners in and around Malmsbury, eventually merged with a range of other mining unions in 1874 to form the Amalgamated Miners' Association of Victoria after the strike and riots at Clunes in 1873. Initially there were 1,832 members drawn from twelve unions. The union soon spread to New South Wales where it becmae the strongest union in that colony. In 1916, it became the Australian Coal & Shale Employees' Federation, also known as the 'Miners' Federation'.
