Summary
Arthur Dexter Murgatroyd was born in Charters Towers in 1896. He worked with the Postmaster General's Department in both Charter Towers and Townsville prior to the First World War. He joined the Australian Imperial Force and saw service in France. After the War he spent some time in Melbourne, returning to Townsville during the Depression years. Here he worked on the main roads and became Secretary of the Federated Clerks' Union, a post he held until the 1970s. Arthur Dexter Murgatroyd was deeply involved in politics through the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He was local campaign director for Council, State and Federal elections, the first Secretary of the Hermit Park Branch of the ALP, all aldermen, who were expelled from the Party by the Queensland Central Executive.
