Formed in 1881 under the Trade Union Act, the Registrar of Friendly Societies was responsible for registering undustrial bodies as well as trade unions in the state of New South Wales. On the 1 July 1926 the Industrial Registrar overtook the functions of the Registrar of Friendly Societies with the enactment of the Trade Union (Amendment) Act, 1926.
