Brooker, William Edward (1891 - 1948)

Born: 1891  Middlesex, England.  Died: 1948.
Brooker emigrated to Australia with his wife and infant son in 1921, settling in Tasmania. Working initially as a labourer and then as a pipe fitter, Brooker joined the Amalgamated Engineering Union and later, the Australian Labor Party. He entered state politics in 1934 as the member for Franklin and served in several senior ministries in the Cosgrove government. He was appointed Premier while Cosgrove faced charges for bribery and conspiracy. He was Premier from December 1947 until he resigned in February 1948, upon Cosgrove's aquittal.
