Port Kembla Branch: Oral history recording
Interviewees: Albert Smith and Ray Elliot
Interviewer: Annette Woods
Albert Smith and Ray Elliot were employed as dock workers on the 14 November 1938 when the Waterside Workers' Federation refused to load iron ore onto the Japan-bound vessel, 'Dalfram'. The then Attorney-General, Robert Menzies, went to Port Kembla to persuade workers to load the vessel. As a result of his advocacy of continued exports, Menzies earned the sobriquet of 'Pig-Iron Bob'. The dispute ended on the 12 January 1939. The interview deals with the role of various parties such as BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd.) and Jim Healy. It also discusses aspects of the Depression, and various Waterside Workers strikes and lockouts at Port Kembla.- Formats
