Trade Union entry Amalgamated Postal Linesmen Sorters & Letter Carriers Union of Australia (1925 - 1926)

Summary

The Amalgamated Postal Linesmen Sorters' & Letter Carriers' Union of Australia was formed in 1925 following a change of name from the Commonwealth Public Service Fourth Division Employees' Union of Australia. Formed just a year earlier, the Commonwealth Public Service Fourth Division Employees Union of Australia had links dating from the late nineteenth century via the Australian Letter Carriers' Association which had operated from 1912.

A year later, in 1926, the Union re-emerged as the Amalgamated Postal Workers' Union of Australia [APWUA]. Operating until 1974 the APWUA reregistered as the Australian Postal & Telecommunications' Union and retained this title, despite further amalgamations and reregistrations, until 1992. In 1992, the Australian Postal & Telecommunications' Union amalgamated with the Australian Telecommunications Employees' Association/Australian Telephone & Phonogram Officers' Association and became the Communication Workers' Union of Australia. A further amalgamation in 1994 with the Electrical Electronic Plumbing & Allied Workers' Union of Australia to form the all encompassing Communications Electrical Electronic Energy Information Postal Plumbing & Allied Services' Union of Australia.
