Summary

The Australian Commonwealth Public Service Clerical Association was formed in 1913. Operating until 1919, the Association was renamed slightly to the Commonwealth Public Service Clerical Association and then, in 1956, to the Administrative & Clerical Officers' Association, Commonwealth Public Service. After a further change of name in 1982, this time to the Administrative & Clerical Officers' Association, Australian Government Employment, the union merged with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Staff Union and the Australian Public Service Association so that, in 1989, it eventually became known as the Australian Public Sector & Broadcasting Union, Australian Government Employment. A further amalgamation with the Meat Inspectors' Association in 1991 produced a new union, but not a new name. However, the amalgamation with the Professional Officers' Association, Australian Public Service soon after, in 1992, was reflected in the new title: the Australian Public Sector Professional & Broadcasting Union, Australian Government Employment. Later on, in the same year, this union, as result of a further amalgamation with the Professional Radio & Electronics Institute of Australasia, became known as the Public Sector Professional Technical Communications Aviation & Broadcasting Union. In 1993 the union changed once again to become the Public Sector Professional Scientific Research Technical Communications Aviation & Broadcasting Union following a further amalgamation with the newly formed CSIRO Staff Association. An influx of members from the deregistered State Public Services Federation in 1994 stimulated another change of name to the Community & Public Sector Union [CPSU].
