Summary

Originally formed in 1908 as the Australian Saddlery Trades Employees' Federation, this union has a direct lineage with one of Victoria's traditional eight-hour craft unions. By 1915 the Australian Saddlery Trades Employees' Federation had become the Australian Saddlery & Leather Workers Trades Employees' Federation. Deregistered in 1918, the Australian Saddlery & Leather Workers Trades Employees' Federation was reregistered under this name again later that year. In 1922, after members of the deregistered Australian Sail & Tent Makers' Society began joining the union it was impelled to change its name again, this time to the Australian Saddlery Leather Sail & Canvas Workers Trades Employees' Federation. In 1924 the union became the Australian Saddlery Leather Sail Canvas Tanning Leather Dressing & Allied Workers Trades Employees' Federation which lasted until 1945 when it opted for the more manageable Australian Leather & Allied Trades Employees' Federation. This union suffered from changing markets and fashions as well as the introduction of mechanisation and synthetic materials and was de-registered in 1972. Its members however, went on to enter the fold of the Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union of Australia.
