Summary
The Australian Teachers' Union [ATU] was formed through an amalgamation of the ACT Teachers' Federation, the Northern Territory Teachers' Federation and the Australian Teachers' Federation in 1991, although the earliest origins of the ATU can be found in the Federated State School Teachers' Association of Australia which was federally registered in 1924. Indeed, the title 'Australian Teachers' Union' had been in existance since 1930. From 1993, however, the Union has been known as the Australian Education Union and has a membership of 155,000 educators who work in public schools, colleges, early childhood and vocational settings in all states and territories of Australia. Members include teachers and allied educational staff, principals and administrators mainly in government school and TAFE systems
