Summary

The Australian Telegraphists' & Clerical Assistants' Union has its origins in the Australian Telegraphists' Union.

Formed in 1920 as a breakaway group of the Australian Commonwealth Post & Telegraph Officers' Association, the Australian Telegraphists' Union deregistered just a few months later. It was formed again in 1921 under the same title. By 1925 it was known as the Australian Telegraphists & Clerical Assistants' Union.

Two years later, in 1927, the Union re-emerged as the Australian Third Division Telegraphists & Postal Clerks Union. Operating until 1966 the Third Division Telegraphists & Postal Clerks Union reregistered as the Union of Postal Clerks & Telegraphists. By 1990 the Union had merged into the Australian Postal & Telecommunications' Union, retaining this title, despite further amalgamations and reregistrations, until 1992. In 1992, the Australian Postal & Telecommunications' Union amalgamated with the Australian Telecommunications Employees' Association/Australian Telephone & Phonogram Officers' Association and became the Communication Workers' Union of Australia. A further amalgamation in 1994 with the Electrical Electronic Plumbing & Allied Workers' Union of Australia to form the all encompassing Communications Electrical Electronic Energy Information Postal Plumbing & Allied Services' Union of Australia.
