Summary
The origins of the United Firefighters' Union [UFU] date back to the formation of state branches at the turn of the century. In 1911 the United Firefighters' Union of Victoria was established to represent all firemen (but not officers, who are represented by the Professional Fire Brigade Officers' Association). In 1966 the United Firefighters' Union of Victoria was deregistered, but three years later, in 1969, a national body, registered simply as the United Firefighters' Union was established in its place and so adopted many of the Victorian union's old members. The United Firefighters' Union's members consisted of Metropolitan Fire Authority and Country Fire Authority employees. It was a voluntary association of state unions as it had failed to win federal registration due to legislation prohibiting the classification of firefighting as an 'industry'. In 1970 the United Firefighters' Union was deregistered. By 1974 a new union, the Federal Firefighters' Union had been formed to fill the role of the UFU. In 1990, the union was finally granted federal registration as the United Firefighters Union of Australia.
