Summary

The Australian National University General Staff Association [ANUGSA] was founded in 1954 to cover all non-academic staff members at the ANU. It was registered in Canberra under the Companies Act, but not registered under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. Although preliminary steps were taken in 1957 to have the ANUGSA registered, this was not achieved because of the existence of unions which could adequately cover non-academic staff.

In 1968, with staff joining the relevant union and in face of the probable federal registration of the Health & Research Employees' Association, the Council of ANUGSA proposed that the Association become a 'welfare' organisation, to be concerned with staff policy and promotions, education, traffic parking, amenities and representation on the ANU Council and the Australian Council of Universities General Staff Association.

In 1973, the ANUGSA title was altered to the Staff Amenities & Welfare Association (ANU) Incorporated. In 1976 this organisation was terminated.
