Australasian Society of Engineers (ii) (1938 - 1991) |
| Function: Trade Union (Federal) | ||||
| The Australasian Society of Engineers was established in 1890, first federally registered as a trade union in 1910 and became defunct in February 1938. An organisation with the same name was reregistered in August 1938, which existed until 1991 when it amalgamated with the Federated Ironworkers' Association of Australia to form the Federation of Industrial Manufacturing & Engineering Employees. A quick succession of amalgamations in September 1992 to the Australian Glass Workers’ Union and then in November 1992 to a number of unions representing brushmakers, rope and cordage workers and carpenters and joiners caused the union to reregister on both occasions but under the same name. This union later amalgamated with the Australian Workers' Union to form the AWU-FIME Amalgamated Union in 1993, later known simply as the AWU. This union was not related to the Amalgamated Society of Engineers which later became the Amalgamated Engineering Union. See "online sources" for a pedigree chart of this entity. |
