Summary
The Mutual Services Association which was formed in 1884, changed its name in 1900 to the Amalgamated Society of Railway Employees. In 1911 this union and cognate organisations voted overwhelmingly to form a united Victorian Railways Union which, in 1921 became the Victorian Branch of the Australian Railways Union [ARU]. In 1993 the ARU merged with other unions to form the Australian Rail Tram & Bus Industry Union.
