During the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, Ed Stannett was a representative of the Townsville Apprentice Advisory Committee, a Secretary of the Townsville Sub-branch of the Building Workers' Industrial Union of Australia [BWIU] and a Northern Organiser for the Queensland BWIU. Stannett also maintained a connection with the Australian Labor Party.
