Brisbane Butchers Employees Union (1890 - )

Archival/Heritage Sources
Function: Trade Union (State or Territory only)
Location: Brisbane, Queensland
The union tradition among meat workers in Queensland seems to date from the establishment of the Brisbane Butchers' Employees' Union in 1889. Like many labour organisations during that era, the Union failed to survive the depression years of the 1890s.

The formation of the Queensland Branch of the Australasian Federated Butchers' Employees' Union in 1906 resulted in the renewal of union activity & the recruitment of abattoir as well as retail workers. The Union became the Australasian Meat Industry Employees' Union in 1912.
