In 1908, unions representing retail workers in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia joined together to form, and register with the Conciliation and Arbitration Court, the Shop Assistants' and Warehouse Employees' Federation. Over time, State unions in Tasmania, Newcastle and Western Australia became part of the national union. By 1972, the Union changed its name to the Shop Distributive & Allied Employees' Association. In 1991, the Union merged with the Australian Hairdressers' Wigmakers' & Hairworkers' Employees' Federation and the Mannequins & Models Guild of Australia but retained the name Shop Distributive & Allied Employees' Association.
