Summary

In 1908, unions representing retail workers in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia joined together to form the Shop Assistants and Warehouse Employees' Federation. Over time, State unions in Tasmania, Newcastle and Western Australia became part of the national union. By 1972 it was registered with the Conciliation and Arbitration Court as the Shop Distributive & Allied Employees' Association. In 1991 the Association amalgamated with the Mannequins' & Models' Guild of Australia and the Australian Hairdressers Wigmakers & Hairworkers Employees' Federation, causing to reregister once again as the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
