Summary
The Australian Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers originated in 1861 in Victoria and later in other States. It came to represent enginemen, guards and cleaners on Australian railways. As a decentralised, yet strongly organised union, the history of the Australian Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and its subsequent and previous bodies, both known as the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen, reflects the development of national union development after 1880, and craft union-industrial union relations. The Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen was officially registered under federal industrial relations legislation as late as 1921. By 1926 the union had changed its name to the Australian Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, only to change it back to the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen in 1927. After 1970, membership swelled as a result of the inclusion of members from the deregistered Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen [AFULE] Commonwealth Division. In 1993 the AFULE merged with the Australian Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees' Association, the National Union of Rail Workers of Australia and the Australian Railways Union to form the Australian Rail Tram & Bus Industry Union.
