Summary
Registered federally in 1915, the General Division Officers' Union of the Trade and Customs Department of Australia was established to represent the industrial interests of Australian Customs Officers working on community protection, compliance, revenue collection, facilitation and related duties throughout Australia. Operating under this title for ten years, the Union changed names in 1925 to become the Fourth Division Officers' Association of the Trade and Customs Department of Australia. By 1949 it had changed once more to become the Customs Officers' Association of Australia, Fourth Division [COA]. The COA remains one of the few independent workplace-specific trade unions at a national level in Australia.
