Summary
The formation of the Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 1991 merged two nineteenth century lineages in the State Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Victoria) and the Victorian Employers' Federation.
The State Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Victoria) was first established as the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce [MCC] in 1851. It wasn't until 1987 that the MCC changed names to the State Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Victoria). In 1885, the Victorian Employers' Union was formed. Operating for just sixteen years the Union changed slightly in 1901 to become the Victorian Employers' Federation. The 1991 merger with the State Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Victoria) established an all-encompassing peak employer body within Victoria. With the merger, VECCI's combined membership totalled 10000, drawn from all industries, big and small.
