Formed in 1969 as a result of a merger between the Australian Primary Producers' Union and the National Farmers' Union of Australia, the Australian Farmers' Federation amalgamated ten years later, in 1979, with the Australian Wheatgrowers' Federation, the Australian Wool & Meat Producers' Federation, Australian Vegetable Growers' Association, the Australian Woolgrowers' & Graziers' Council, Australian Seed Producers' Federation, the Cattlemens' Union of Australia and the Australian National Cattlemens' Council to form the National Farmers' Federation.
